the Italian tour…

A group of Italian cultural enthusiasts gather at dusk to dream a little dream of Italy. There’s bruschetta with salsa verde.  There’s Vermouth Bianco served with crushed sage, a slice of lemon and a dash of soda.  Prosecco, prosciutto e melone and stars in everyone’s eyes.  Ingrid points to an image of impossible beauty projected onto the cafe wall and everyone sighs.

It’s behind-the-scenes at Origini, as prospective participants gather to dream their In giro tour into being (‘origini’ spelt backwards, ‘in giro’, means ‘going around’).  There’s talk of castles and villas and mock Medieval battles and truffles and private tastings of every kind of Piemontese wine:  Barbera, Dolcetto, Nebbiolo, Barolo…  A salt bath in the Grotta del Sale of a seventeenth century monastery.  A view of the Torino skyline from the former Fiat factory’s rooftop test racing-track.

So we dabble in the promise of Piemonte, this undiscovered gem lying at the foot of the Alps in the northwest corner of Italy – the birthplace of the Slow Food movement and the reason for Origini’s being… the unfolding of one journey giving shape and flavour to the unfurling of another…
